McDermott Named MVC Player of the Week For Record 7th Time
OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton junior Doug McDermott has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday. It his seventh honor this season, breaking the single-season mark he had held with National Player of the Year Hersey Hawkins (1987-88), and his 12 career honors trail only Hawkins' mark of 14.
McDermott averaged 18.0 points, 11.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists as Creighton split road games at Northern Iowa and Evansville. In the process, he became the first junior in league history to surpass 2,000 career points.
He made 13-of-22 shots from the field (59.1 percent), including 3-of-6 three-pointers (50 percent), while also draining 7-of-9 free throw attempts (77.8 percent).
McDermott opened his week with 15 points and 12 rebounds at Northern Iowa on Wednesday. He made 6-of-10 shots from the floor and 1-of-2 free throws.
McDermott closed out his week with 21 points, 10 rebounds and four assists as Creighton snapped a three-game skid by becoming the first MVC road team to win at Evansville this season. He made7-of-12 field goals and 6-of-7 free throws in the win, including one with 7.7 seconds left that was the final score in the three-point win.
Creighton (21-6, 10-5 MVC) hosts Southern Illinois (11-15, 4-11 MVC) on Tuesday at 7:05 pm.
