Keys to the Game:
Scouting the Shockers (17-7, 11-1 MVC)
Wichita State suffered its first loss in Valley play on Feb. 10, 75-55 to Bradley. The Shockers, however, remain two games ahead of Creighton in first place.
Senior Jessica Diamond and sophomore Alex Harden provide the bulk of the offense for Wichita State. Diamond is averaging 13.0 points, while Harden put up 10 points per game. In conference play those numbers flip as Harden leads the team with 13.1 and Diamond is averaging 12.1.
Offense, however, is not the core of the Shockers. This team wins games on defense. Wichita State is a physical team that contests every pass. The Shockers prefer to keep the game in the high 50s to low 60s. When holding opponents to 55 points or less, Wichita State is 11-3.
Flanery against the Shockers
Coach Flanery has faced Wichita State 23 times as a head coach, holding an 18-5 mark against the Shockers. Creighton has not lost to the Shockers in Omaha under Flanery, posting a perfect 10-0 mark.
Queen of the Court
Freshman guard Marissa Janning scored a career-high 26 points in the Bluejays 67-51 win over Missouri State on Feb. 14. Janning’s 26 points were not only a career-high, but also topped the Bluejays’ record for points scored in a single game in D.J. Sokol Arena. The previous high was 25 points, shared by junior Carli Tritz (Jan. 29, 2012) and Kelsey Woodard (Jan. 27, 2011). Janning also tied Woodard for most three-pointers made (6) and attempted (11) in D.J. Sokol Arena.
Make it a Double-Double, Kampy Style
Valentine’s day proved special for junior Alyssa Kamphaus as she recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Jays’ 67-51 win over Missouri State. Kamphaus’ numbers tied career-highs in points and rebounds and set a new one for minutes played (28).
Make it an Even 200 for Ally
Senior Ally Jensen sank her 200th three-pointer on Feb. 14. The senior for Ames, Iowa sits fifth place in Creighton history from beyond the arc.
Creighton remains the NCAA leader in three-pointers made per game with an average of 9.5. Additionally freshman Marissa Janning moved up to 10th overall in three-point percentage. The Watertown, Minn., native raised her average to 43.5 with a 6-of-11 (.545) performance against Missouri State (2/14).
Tritz closing in on 1,000
Junior Carli Tritz is on a milestone chase, Tritz currently has 990 points in her three year career, with 10 more she’ll become the 24th Bluejay to reach 1,000 points. Carli is trying to join an elite list of Jays to reach the century mark in under 100 games, she has currently played in 86 contests. It took Doug McDermott of the men’s squad 57 games to accomplish the feat.
