OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton baseball catcher Anthony Bemboom has added his name to the list of Bluejays drafted under Ed Servais, being picked by the Anaheim Angels in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft on Wednesday. Bemboom is the highest-drafted Bluejay catcher since A.J. Walkanoff was the No. 611 pick, also in the 22nd round.
Bemboom joins teammate Ty Blach as members of the 2012 squad to be picked in the draft, as Blach was picked up by the San Francisco Giants in the draft yesterday. The duo increases Servais' tally to 16 players drafted in the nine seasons he has been at the helm of Bluejay baseball.
A Sauk Rapids, MN., native, Bemboom leaves Creighton with a career .254 batting average, highlighted by his .270 average in the 2012 season. He led the team with 41 RBI this season, picking up eight alone in the Los Angeles Regional. Bemboom also paced the Bluejays with 17 doubles this season, tied for the team lead in triples with four and added a pair of home runs to pst a .404 slugging percentage, second best on the team.
Bemboom played some of his best baseball at the end of his Bluejay career, being named to the All-Regional team in the Los Angeles Regional after hitting .444 with eight RBI, two doubles and a home run in the tournament.
Creighton finished the 2012 season with a 28-30 overall record, making it to the NCAA Tournament after winning the MVC Tournament for the second straight season.
