Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which is expected to be cut down to 12 late Sunday morning.
The 12 men that make the team will head to Lithuania late next week for a few practices and scrimmages before competing in the 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship For Men in late June/early July in Latvia.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his first entry, with photo by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
Day 1 (June 17, 2011)
Hello Jays fans,
Day 1 of this journey is in the books. I think I heard “ Do you have your passport?” come out of my coaches mouth more this morning than him telling me to get in a defensive stance my entire freshman year. Driving by downtown Omaha on the way to the airport this morning made me realize how crazy this next week is going to be with the CWS coming to TD Ameritrade. People are going to forget about Rosenblatt in no time. I would love to see Cal take it all this year considering they were on the verge of dropping their program a year ago.
As I got to Denver I met up with a couple guys who are also trying out for Team USA this weekend. We were in line to board the plane to Colorado Springs and the lady tells us there is matenence issue with the plane and they have to take it for a “test run”. We waited around for about 30 minutes and then they told us lightning was in the area so our flight was cancelled. They sent vans for us and we arrived at the gym right on time for practice. Overall it was a pretty good first practice. We did some skill work and then basically scrimmaged the rest of the night. Its crazy seeing Roy Williams, Jim Boeheim, and Billy Donovan on the sidelines giving us advice after each scrimmage. I look forward to the rest of the weekend and will keep you posted!
