TUCSON, Ariz. -- Mike Gerber, a centerfielder on the Creighton baseball team, has been named a Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-American. The team, selected by staffers from Collegiate Baseball newspaper, was announced earlier in the week.

Gerber led all Missouri Valley Conference freshmen with seven homers, and also added 23 RBI while hitting .280 in his first season as a Bluejay. He started 50 of his 52 appearances this season, and also added eight doubles, three triples and six stolen bases, while also handling all 112 defensive chances flawlessly. His .488 slugging percentage ranked second on the team to All-American Trever Adams.

Gerber is a native of Naperville, Ill.,

Gerber is just the fourth Creighton representative since 1999 to earn first-team Freshman All-America accolades. Past honorees include Casey Schmidt (2007), Tony Roth (2002) and Scott Yahraus (1999).

Under the direction of Ed Servais, Creighton finished the 2011 season with a 45-16 record while becoming the first team in program history to sweep the MVC regular-season and Tournament titles in the same season.
