OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 6 Creighton men’s soccer team remained unbeaten on the season, recording its second consecutive shutout of 2013 after a 3-0 victory over Cal Poly at Morrison Stadium on Sunday night.
Creighton (2-0-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead over Cal Poly (1-1-0) at 35:03 of the first half when freshman Ricardo Perez scored his first career goal as a Bluejay. CU senior Sean Kim sent a pass in from the right side and Perez beat Mustang goalie Wade Hamilton for the early advantage.
The Bluejays maintained their lead into halftime.
In the second half, junior Eric Miller doubled the Creighton lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute. Miller redirected a ball past Hamilton on a header coming in from a free kick by freshman Fabian Herbers.
About 13 minutes later the Jays scored the final goal of the evening. Sophomore Timo Pitter blasted the ball into the goal after assists from Jose Ribas and Herbers. It marked Pitter’s second score of the season in just two matches.
Junior Alex Bolowich earned his second victory of the year in goal for the Jays to improve to 2-0-0 on the year. Bolowich was held out of the second half as an injury precaution. Sophomore Connor Sparrow took over in the second half for the Jays. The CU keepers combined for four saves on the evening.
Hamilton dropped to 1-1-0 on the season for the Mustangs.
Creighton edged Cal Poly 9-8 in shots on the evening.
CU head coach Elmar Bolowich is undefeated at 5-0-1 combined in the first pair of matches over each of the last three seasons. It marks the second time in three years that Bolowich has directed the Jays to back-to-back shutouts to open the season. Creighton opened 2011 with eight consecutive blank sheets.
The Bluejays now lead the all-time series with Cal Poly 2-0-0 at home inside Morrison Stadium.
Creighton hosts Socctoberfest on Friday, Sept. 6 when the Bluejays battle Columbia at 7:30 p.m. inside Morrison Stadium.
