Last Week
Creighton took two of three from Seton Hall in its final home BIG EAST series of the season (May 2-4). In doing so the Bluejays clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament.

This Week
Creighton travels to New York for its first road matchup with St. John’s. The two teams enter the weekend deadlocked in first place in the BIG EAST Conference at 10-2.

Looking Ahead
The Bluejays final week of the regular season will be a busy one as Creighton plays a rare, day/night doubleheader on Tuesday, May 13. Creighton plays Stephen F. Austin at 12 pm, then will battle Nebraska at 7:00 pm.

Creighton vs. St. John’s Series
Creighton has played St. Jonn’s once before this weekend as the two teams met in 1991, a 15-8 win for the Bluejays in an early season tournament at Fresno State on March 14.

Scouting the Red Storm  (30-15, 10-2 BIG EAST)
St. John’s began 2014 with just three wins in its first 13 games (3-10), but since opening its home schedule on March 11 the Red Storm have been a different team. St. John’s is 19-2 at home this season and have won 27 of its last 32 games to boast its current 30-15 mark.

Unlike the Bluejays, St. John’s is an offense squad that wins by outslugging its opposition. The Redstorm are hitting .322 in BIG EAST play, led by the current BIG EAST Player of the Week (Bret Dennis). Dennis is hitting .337 on the season, but has a .429 mark in conference play.

On the hill the ace of the Red Storm staff is James Lomangino. The right-hander, however, is just 5-4 with a 3.88 ERA in 12 starts this season. Lomagino has an impressive 67 strikeouts in 72 innings, but has also allowed 64 hits.

Differing Styles
For those who’ve followed ESB (Ed Servais Baseball), a focus on defense and eliminating free bases (walks, hit batters & errors) on the mound is fundamental. This weekend Creighton enters the St. John’s series with 28 errors in 40 games.

By contrast St. John’s has committed 59 errors in 45 games. The Red Storm have worked 209 walks and have swiped 42 bags on the season.

Bluejays Sowing Poise of Champions
Creighton is 9-1 games decided by 1 run this year. Each of Ed Servais’ first 3 teams to win 9+ 1-run games (2005, 2007, 2011) have gone on to reach the NCAA

Speaking of Championships
The Bluejay Baseball can clinch at least a share of the first BIG EAST Championship in school history with a sweep of St. John’s this weekend.

Time to Posture for Position
With both Creighton and St. John’s having already clinched a spot in the four-team BIG EAST Tournament, the weekend series will be more about seeding and positioning to claim the BIG EAST crown.
