Volleyball Up to 32nd in Poll; Jereb Earns MVC Honor
Release: 09/17/2012
OMAHA, Neb. -- Wins over Missouri State and Wichita State last weekend have impressed the national pollsters, who voted the Creighton Volleyball team to 32nd in the AVCA Division I Coaches poll released on Monday. In addition, Melanie Jereb was named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week after posting a pair of double-doubles.

Seeing her first career MVC action, Jereb averaged 3.22 kills, 2.44 digs and 0.89 blocks per set while hitting .338 in wins vs. Missouri State (3-2) and Wichita State (3-1) to earn her first award at the collegiate level.  She also handled 46 serve receptions without an error, 24 of which the Jays converted directly into a kill.

Jereb recorded her first two collegiate double-doubles in the wins, finishing with 15 kills and 10 digs vs. MSU and 14 kills and 12 digs vs. WSU. Jereb’s 15 kills against Missouri State were a career-high, as were her seven blocks. She served the final three points in CU’s opening set victory, and would end up the match-clinching kill in the fifth set as well. Against the Shockers, Jereb had kills on the final three points of a 25-19 set one victory. She would serve a 4-0 run that gave the Jays a 20-16 lead in the third set and help CU to a 2-1 lead in the match.

In this week's AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 poll, the Jays are in 32nd place, earning 34 votes in the poll, marking a big climb from seven points and a tie for 36th one week earlier. This is just the fourth time in program history that the Jays have received multiple votes and shown up in the "others receiving votes" listing.  It also marks the first time in program history the Jays were the only MVC representative in the poll.

In addition, Monday marked the second edition of the Rich Kern Percentage Index, a ranking system developed by RichKern.com that mimics the official NCAA RPI. Thanks in part to four wins over top-56 foes (Wisconsin, Tulsa, Northern Colorado, Wichita State), the Jays are up one spot to sixth in this week's RKPI. Wednesday's Bluejay opponent, Kansas, ranks No. 15 in the RKPI, which should boost Creighton's current schedule ranked No. 12 overall. Kansas State, the only team to beat CU this fall, maintained its spot atop the RKPI rankings.

Creighton plays at Kansas on Wednesday at 6:30 pm in a match that can be heard on KZOT (1180 AM). The match will also be televised in Omaha on Cox Channel 2.
