Unbeaten Start Ends as Volleyball Swept by No. 21 Wildcats

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton went toe-to-toe with the nation's No. 21 volleyball team before Kansas State claimed a 25-22, 25-18, 25-21 win in a Saturday afternoon match at the Bluejay Invitational.

Both teams entered the match 4-0 and receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll, but K-State remained unbeaten all-time vs. CU (6-0) with the triumph. The win guarantees Kansas State the Bluejay Invitational title with one match yet to play.

Kansas State's Lilla Porubek led all players with 16 kills and .341 hitting, while Creighton was led by eight kills from Melanie Jereb.

The first set featured 10 ties and six lead changes as the Bluejays steadily built an 18-15 lead. The Wildcats responded with a 6-1 run to take control, eventually winning the set 25-22. Porubek had six kills for K-State, while Creighton had five kills from Megan Bober. The Jays fell despite a healthy .341 hitting percentage and 16 kills.

Creighton led the up until the midway point of the second set as well, leading 10-6 at one juncture. But setter Caitlyn Donahue served a 5-0 KSU run and Kuulei Kabalis had a 5-0 run a short time later as the Wildcats pulled away late to post a 25-18 victory.

The third set quickly went Kansas State's way. A backbreaking11-0 run with Kaitlynn Pelger at the service line gave KSU a 14-3 lead. The Wildcat margin reached as large as 18-5 before CU nearly made an epic comeback. The Jays went on a frantic rally and drew within 22-19 before a service error gave the Wildcats some cushion. A kill by Porubek on match point closed the match with a 25-21 score in the third set. Porubek had five kills on .500 hitting in the frame.

Porubek's 16 kills paced KSU, which also got eight kills from Kathleen Ludwig and Pelger. Pelger paced all players with 14 digs and also served up four aces. KSU had 45 kills, six aces, 54 digs and nine blocks while hitting .215.

Jereb led CU with eight kills and .316 hitting. Kelli Browning and Bober each had seven kills, while Bober also topped CU with 25 assists and 13 digs. Creighton had 36 kills, three aces, 58 digs and seven blocks while hitting .167.

The Bluejay Invitational concludes tonight with the final two matches. Kansas State takes on Syracuse in the 5:30 pm match before Creighton hosts Denver in a 7:30 pm affair. An All-Tournament Team will be honored after the 7:30 pm match. Denver swept Syracuse (25-17, 25-18, 25-13) in the first match of the day on Saturday.
