OMAHA, Neb. - Following a season opening 3-1 win over Northern Illinois, the Creighton men's soccer team climbed to No. 2 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll on Tuesday, Aug. 28. The Jays trail only the 2011 defending NCAA Champion North Carolina, who remained atop the rankings with a victory over Gardner-Webb.
The No. 2 ranking equals the high from the 2011 season when the Jays made a run into the College Cup, finishing the season 21-2-1 with a tie in the national semifinal match. The Bluejays finished last season ranked fourth in the NSCAA poll, but spent a portion of the season as high as second
Creighton is the top-ranked team in the NSCAA Midwest Regional Rankings. The remaining four national polls have the Jays in varying spots throughout the Top-15. Creighton is ranked No. 13 by Soccer America, No. 5 by Soccer Times, No. 14 by College Soccer News and No. 6 by TopDrawer Soccer.
The disparity of rankings should be diminished this week as the Jays host No. 7 Akron, Rutgers (RV) and SIU Edwardsville (RV) this weekend in the Ameritas Classic on Friday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 2 in Morrison Stadium. Rutgers and SIUE kick off the tournament at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Jays and Zips meet at 7:36 p.m. The meeting of top-10 teams will be televised in Nebraska on NET (Nebraska Educational Television).
The Ameritas Classic concludes on Sunday, Sept. 2 as Akron faces SIUE at 12:00 p.m. and Creighton will play Rutgers at 2:30 p.m.
