OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team is looking to crack the win column as the Jays face off with South Dakota today at 4 p.m.
Scouting the Creighton Bluejays:
Creighton showed some offensive spark last week, notching goals in both contests. Unfortunately the Jays settled for an 0-1-1 week as the settled for a draw at home against Utah State and fell to No. 4 Oklahoma State, 4-1 on Sunday. In both contests the Jays scored first. Senior Brittney Neuman scored against the Aggies on Friday, her 25th career goal. Sunday it was fellow senior Sarah Kendall notching her second career goal. Senior goalkeeper Katie Jo Swanson figures to see the majority of time in the net this season and thus far she has played every second (291:31).
Scouting the South Dakota Coyotes:
The Coyotes rallied back from a 3-1 deficit to tie North Dakota last weekend. Junior forward Jenny Teslow led the charge for the Coyotes, scoring two goals in the second half.
Three different players have seen time in the net for the Coyotes, led by sophomore Mackenzie Viktor. She started the first two contests for South Dakota, but did not play against North Dakota on Sunday, Aug. 26.
Senior Gabriela Guillén to play for Costa Rica National Team against Team USA:
Guillén has called up to play for Costa Rican National Team in a friendly match against the U.S. National Team on Sept. 1 in Rochester, N.Y.
This marks the third time that Guillén has played for her home country, playing for the U20 and U17 squads previously, but it is her first opportunity to play for the Costa Rican National Team.
Guillén will miss the Jays’ Aug. 31 game at Kansas, but expects to be back in time to play in Creighton’s home match with Arizona on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
“It’s an honor and a really exciting experience, this is the first time I will play for the full national team,” said Guillén.
The match on Sept. 1 is the first for the U.S. National Team since it won the Gold Medal against Japan in the 2012 Olympics in England. The match has already been designated as a sell out, but it is schedule to be shown live on NBC at 2 p.m.
“We are excited for Gaby to be able to have this opportunity to play for her country (Costa Rica) against the Gold Medal winning USA,” said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. “It is sure to be a special environment with the game being sold out and an experience she will remember forever. We look forward to having her back with us for the Arizona game.”
