Jays head into 2012 season with No. 3 Ranking
Release: 08/22/2012

OMAHA, Neb. - With the 2012 Creighton men's soccer set to begin this Friday, several publications have distributed their respective preseason polls.  In early August the Jays were slotted No. 3 in the National Soccer Coaches Associaton of America (NSCAA) preseaon top 25.

Creighton made a run into the College Cup in 2011, finishing the season 21-2-1 with a tie in the national semifinal match.  The Bluejays finished last season ranked fourth in the NSCAA poll, but spent a portion of the season as high as second.

Creighton advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2011, marking the 19th time in the last 20 seasons, advancing to the College Cup for the first time in nine years.  The Bluejays won both the Missouri Valley Conference Regular Season and Tournament titles, setting a school record with a 14-0-0 home record. Creighton's defense set an NCAA record with a 0.20 goals against average, surrendering just five goals total on the season.

The Bluejays return a solid core of players from the 2011 squad, led by 2011 MVC All-Conference Second Team members Jose Gomez and Bruno Castro.  The duo combined for 10 goals and 16 assists last season, seeing most of their playing time in the midfield.

In the exhibition season the Jays played No. 6 Maryland to a 3-3 on Aug. 12, then defeated Nebraska Omaha, 1-0, on Aug. 14.

Creighton is ranked No. 14 by College Soccer News and No. 7 by TopDrawer Soccer.

The Bluejays open the 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 24 against Northern Illinois in Morrison Stadium at 7:30 p.m.  The Jays and Huskies met in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, a 3-0 win for Creighton.
