SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Four members of the Creighton baseball team have picked up honors from the Missouri Valley Conference, announced Monday on the eve of the MVC Baseball Tournament. Anthony Bemboom is named to the second team All-MVC as a utility player, while Nick Judkins (first base), Chance Ross (third base) and Mike Gerber (outfield) earn honors on the All-Defensive team.
Bemboom has been a staple in the Bluejay lineup in his two seasons at Creighton, seeing time this season at catcher, right field and designated hitter. He is hitting .249 overall, with a team-leading 30 runs driven in and 10 sacrifice bunts.
He has a .235 batting average in conference this season. He has successfully swiped a pair of bases in conference play, while pegging down three attempted stealing base runners from the catchers position.
Judkins, Ross and Gerber give Creighton the edge in members on the initial All-Defensive team, being announced for the first time by the Valley in 2012. Creighton leads the charge with three members on the team, which plays into the defensive minded system head coach Ed Servais has put in place since taking over at Creighton. His teams have ranked in the top-10 in the nation each season, holding a .978 combined fielding percentage in that span.
Judkins has started every game at first base since he arrived on campus, this year committing just one error and holding a .998 fielding percentage. He sits in sixth on the all-time career charts for Creighton with a combined 1,077 putouts in his two seasons at Creighton. He leads the team offensively with a .297 average heading into the tournament.
Ross has held down the hot corner for two seasons, this season holding a .926 overall fielding percentage, including a .953 mark in conference play. He has committed just three errors in conference play, sitting second on the team with 43 assists. Ross is hitting .287 overall this year, second among everyday starters. He leads the team with 13 stolen bases.
Gerber earned a starting spot in the outfield last season and has continued his roam in center field this season. He holds a .992 fielding percentage with 120 putouts. Gerber is hitting .213 in his 50 starts this season, driving in 28 runs with a team-leading three home runs.
Creighton leads the nation with three national Rawlings Gold Glove awards since those began in 2007, and are the only program with multiple honorees in the same season (2009).
The Bluejays open the MVC Tournament tomorrow afternoon, playing No. 1 seed Indiana State at 12:30 pm.
