ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Creighton University junior Justin Carter has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week, league officials announced today.
This is the first weekly MVC award for Carter, a guard/forward from Gaithersburg, Md., as well as first Bluejay to win The Valley’s Newcomer honor this season. Last year five different Creighton players combined for 10 MVC Newcomer of the Week accolades.
Carter helped Creighton to an undefeated week, leading the team with 29 points (14.5 ppg.), 15 rebounds (7.5 rpg.) and six steals (3.0 spg.) in double-digit wins over Indiana State and Missouri State. Carter made 10-of-15 shots from the field (66.7 percent), including 2-of-4 from three-point range (50 percent) while also draining 7-of-9 shots from the line (77.8 percent).
He opened his week with career-highs of 17 points, four steals and two blocked shots while tying his best with eight rebounds in Tuesday's 73-62 win over Indiana State. In Sunday's comeback victory over Missouri State, Carter had 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals in a 24-point win after trailing by 10 points early.
Carter currently leads Creighton with 5.0 rebounds per game and is fourth with 8.1 points per contest. He is the first Bluejay to start his first 23 games at Creighton since Ryan Sears, who would start all 124 games of his record-breaking career from 1997-2001.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday with a 7:05 pm game at Drake. The game can be heard on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM) and will be televised on KMTV.
