Sullivan Guides Bluejays' WSOC Past Western Illinois, 4-0
OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Lauren Sullivan showed why she was on the cover of the gameday program, scoring two goals to lead Creighton women's soccer to a 4-0 win over Western Illinois on Monday, Sept. 1.
The win lifted Creighton to 3-0-0 on the season, while Western Illinois fell to 1-3-0.
Sullivan got the Bluejays on the board in the 13th minute with a dynamic individual effort that resulted in her second goal of the season. Sullivan took the ball along the right side of the field, 45 yards outside the goal. She dribbled past two defenders to the top of the box, then rifled a shot to the upper corner of the net to give Creighton a 1-0 edge.
The remained 1-0 until midway through the second half, when Creighton exploded for three goals over the next 11 minutes. Junior Kirstyn Corder started the streak by heading in a well placed pass from junior Alissa Kohmetscher in the 73rd minute. Standing 20 yards from the goal, Kohmetscher sent a pass to Corder. The Kansas native redirected the ball into the top corner for the Bluejays' second goal of the game.
Kohmetscher set up freshman Summer Khalil in the 78th minute, finding Khalil in space just outside the goal box. The Westside HS graduate slipped past a Western Illinois defender and fired home her first goal from 18 yards at the 77:42 mark.
Up 3-0, Sullivan rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the match from 25 yards out in the 84th minute (83:13).
The Jays dominated possession throughout the match, closing with a 27-9 lead on shots and a 6-1 in corners earned.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 5 as Creighton hosts New Mexico State at 5 p.m.
