QUEENS, N.Y. - Junior Jake Peter blasted a three-run blast over the right field wall in the top of the ninth to propel Creighton baseball to a 13-11 win in the conclusion of Saturday's contest on Sunday, May 11.
The win lifted Creighton to 26-15-1 and 11-3 in BIG EAST play, while St. John's fell to 32-16 overall and 11-3 in conference play.
Down 11-10 with one out in the top of the ninth, senior Brad McKewon lined his fifth hit of the game through the left side. Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Peter. After taking a first pitch strike, Peter blasted a fastball over the right field wall. It was the first runs allowed by St. John's closer Joe Kuzia as he entered the game with a 0.00 ERA in 33.2 innings.
Creighton closer, Bryan Sova, worked a scoreless ninth to preserve the 13-11 win.
This game was picked up at 9:30 am in the top of the sixth inning with St. John's holding a 5-4 lead.
As play resumed Creighton had one out and runners at second and third. The Bluejays pushed across the tying run on McKewon's RBI single.
St. John's appeared to take control with four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Creighton responded with a five-spot of its own in the top of the seventh to take a 10-9 lead.
Walks to Peter and senior Mike Gerber, followed by a single by sophomore Reagan Fowler loaded the bags to open the seventh. Sophomore Brett Murray plated Peter on a sac fly, then freshman Nicky Lopez singled to right to fill the bags once more. Sophomore Joey Mancuso made it 9-7 with a single to right. One out later, McKewon knotted the game with a two-run single to right. Finally Fitzgerald gave the Bluejays the lead, 10-9, with an RBI knock through the right side.
St. John's responded with a single runs in the seventh and the eighth to earn the 11-10 edge.
Sophomore Nick Highberger picked up the win (3-0) for Creighton, allowing one run on three hits in 1.2 innings of relief. Sova earned his seventh save of the season, allowing just one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.
Kuzia took the loss (0-2) as he was tagged for three runs on three hits in one inning of work.
The Bluejays and Red Storm will play the rubber game of their three-game series at 12 pm (CT). Follow the game on Fox Sports 1.
