ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Creighton softball team dropped a BIG EAST semifinal 9-1 at The Ballpark at Rosemont in suburban Chicago.
The No. 4 seed Creighton (29-24. 10-10 BIG EAST) managed just two hits and a run against top-seeded DePaul (40-9, 18-1 BIG EAST) in the setback. As a result, the Blue Demons advance to the BIG EAST Championship final on Saturday against either No. 2 seed St. John’s (27-22, 12-8 BIG EAST) or No. 3 Georgetown (26-21, 12-8 BIG EAST).
CU senior pitcher Becca Changstrom allowed nine runs on eight hits and struck out four batters.
Changstrom started the game in the circle for the Jays.
DePaul opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. The Blue Demons loaded the bases with two walks and a single. A sacrifice fly scored a run and a Creighton error allowed another run to score and provide the 2-0 advantage.
The Blue Demons extended their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the third frame. Back-to-back-to-back singles led off the inning and scored two runs for the home team. After a sacrifice bunt and a walk a two-RBI single brought in two more runs for DePaul’s 6-0 lead.
Creighton cut into the Blue Demons’ lead in the top of the fourth. Senior Blair Lowe singled down the right field line to open the inning. A two-out RBI double by senior Alexis Cantu brought Lowe into score to make the score 6-1 in the fourth frame.
DePaul connected on a single, double and a two-RBI triple to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame with no outs. A fielder’s choice provided the Blue Demons’ deciding run in a 9-1 final in six innings.
Changstrom dropped to 17-13 to close out the year.
The Jays lose the services of six seniors including Cantu, Changstrom and Lowe for 2015 and Creighton’s second season in the BIG EAST.
