Softball Falls 8-4 to DePaul in Series Finale

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team fell 8-4 to league-leading DePaul at the CU Sports Complex Saturday.

Over 600 fans came out to the CU Sports Complex to cheer on Creighton (25-19, 6-8 BIG EAST) on a sunny afternoon, but the Jays fell behind early and could not recoup the lead in a setback to DePaul (33-8, 13-0 BIG EAST). As a result the Blue Demons swept the series to remain undefeated in BIG EAST play while Creighton sits sixth in the league standings but just one game out of third place.

Sophomore Blake Ringle led the Jays with a pair of hits and an RBI. Freshman Allie Reinhart posted two RBI in the game for CU. Seven different Bluejays connected at the plate in the game.

CU senior Becca Changstrom opened in the circle in game one for the Bluejays.

A three-run homer with two outs put the Blue Demons up 3-0 in the top of the first frame

Creighton scored in the bottom of the second. Junior Bri Lingl doubled off the right center wall with one. Sophomore Erin McGonigal entered the game to run for Lingl at second. Next up freshman Jen Daro swatted another long double to the outfield to score McGonigal and cut the lead to 3-1.

The Bluejays closed to within one in the third. Senior Ellen Homan ripped a one-out double to start things off. Junior Liz Dike then reached on a fielder’s choice and Reinhart followed with a single through the right side.  Ringle followed with an RBI single to the same side to cut the Blue Demon lead to 3-2 after three. CU missed an opportunity to bring in more runs as they left the bases loaded.

DePaul answered with three in the top of the fourth inning. A single and hit by pitch set the table for a two-RBI triple to move the visitors ahead 5-2. A one-out sacrifice bunt brought across another score to give the Blue Demons a four-run cushion.

Creighton added a score in the bottom of the fifth. Homan reached on an error and later advanced to second and then third on wild pitches to open the inning. A sacrifice fly from Reinhart would score Homan from third to cut the DePaul lead to 6-4 after five.

The Blue Demons added two final runs in the top of the sixth. CU senior Brittany Telecky came on in relief to open the sixth but DePaul quickly loaded the bases prompting the return of Changstrom. An RBI single and sacrifice fly led to DePaul’s final pair of runs in the game.

Changstrom fell to 14-11 overall with the setback.

The Bluejays step out of conference play when they host instate rival No. 20 Nebraska. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT Wednesday at the CU Sports Complex.
