Baseball Sweeps North Dakota in Double Dip

OMAHA, Neb. - Highlighted by a two-run rally to earn a walk-off win in the nightcap, the Creighton baseball team swept a doubleheader from North Dakota on Saturday, April 5.

The victories pushed Creighton to 14-10-1 on the season, while North Dakota fell to 6-14 overall.

GAME 1: Creighton 6, North Dakota 2

The Bluejays took an early lead in the opening game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Senior Brad McKewon drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a sac bunt from freshman Nicky Lopez and scored on an RBI single from junior Jake Peter.  Peter moved to second on an error in the outfield and came in to score on a two-out RBI knock from sophomore Reagan Fowler
Creighton tacked on three more with a similar plan.  McKewon walked, stole second and took third on an error by the North Dakota catcher.  Lopez brought in McKewon to make it 3-0.  With one down, Peter singled up the middle.  Senior Mike Gerber chased him to third and Fowler blasted a two-run triple to push the Bluejays' edge to 5-0.
Sophomore Matt Warren was dominant on the hill for the Bluejays, limiting North Dakota to two runs (one earned) in 7.2 innings for the win (6-0).  Senior Bryan Sova recorded the final four outs to pick up the save.

GAME 2: Creighton 4, North Dakota 3

After giving up the go ahead run in the top of the ninth, Creighton got contributions from a few unlikely sources to earn the sweep in walk-off fashion.
With one out in the final frame, junior David Wiedeman laced a single to right.  Sophomore Kevin Lamb went down on strikes, but Wiedeman stole second on the final strike.  Down to its final out, Crieghton called upon sophomore Brandon Mikulka.  The Washington native responded with a game-tying triple to right.  The next batter, sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald, capped a five hit day by smacking a ball to second that was bobbled.  Fitzgerald beat the play to first to give the Bluejays a 4-3 walk off win.
Peter earned the win in relief, getting the final two outs of the ninth to move to 2-1, while North Dakota's Tyler Ruemmele (1-3) allowed two runs to take the loss.
The Bluejays wrap up their three-game series with North Dakota on Sunday, April 6 at 1 p.m.
