TULSA, Okla. -- The Creighton Softball team had trouble with one of the nation's top pitching staffs, as No. 21 Tulsa blanked the Bluejays in a pair of games at the Tulsa Invitational on Friday.
Creighton was no-hit in the first game, falling 3-0, before losing the nightcap 8-0 in six innings
No. 21 Tulsa 3, Creighton 0 (Game One) In the opener, 2013 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year Aimee Creger struck out 17 in a dominant no-hit effort. Creger allowed just one baserunner, a five-pitch walk to Blake Ringle in the second inning. Pinch-runner Erin McGonigal would be stranded at second to end CU's only threat of the contest.
Tulsa got all three of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Haley Henshaw started the rally with a one-out single, then moved to second on a wild pitch by Alexis Cantu. Jill Barrett reached via an infield single before Shelby Blanton's two-run triple. Blanton would later score on pinch-hitter Kaitlin Allen's single.
Cantu threw a complete game but fell to 2-2, allowing nine hits and striking out seven in 6.0 innings of work.
Creger (7-0) earned the victory, throwing her fifth career no-hitter, and setting a Tulsa single-game record for strikeouts.
No. 21 Tulsa 8, Creighton 0 (6 innings) Tulsa completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-0 victory over Creighton in game two. Creighton's offense was better, but seven runners were left on base including three in scoring position.
Creighton's best chance came in the top of the third inning of a scoreless game. CU loaded the bases with one out, but a strikeout and fielder's choice ended the prime opportunity.
Tulsa made CU pay in the home half of the inning as Jill Barrett turned a leadoff single into an unearned run to make it 1-0.
The Golden Hurricane blew the game wide open with a four-run fourth inning, three of those of the unearned variety and two of the runs coming after reaching via a walk.
Tulsa closed the game via the run-rule with three runs in the sixth, with two more of those being unearned. Barrett homered on the first pitch of the inning, and Maggie Withee later ended the game with a walk-off infield single.
Becca Changstrom (2-4) suffered the loss. She allowed eight runs, but only two were earned after the CU defense made three errors.
Caitlin Sill threw the first four innings for UT, allowing two hits and two walks to improve to 4-2. Bailey Erwin threw the final two innings.
