FORT MYERS, Fla. - Led by a three-run bomb from sophomore Tommy Clouthier and a two-run shot by junior Jake Peter, the Creighton baseball team downed Minnesota 11-4 on Feb. 22.
The win moved the Bluejays to 1-4 on the season, while Minnesota fell to 4-1.
Inserted into the two hole for the first time this season, Clouthier drew a one-out walk in the top of the first and was along for the ride as Peter ripped his first long-ball of 2014 over the right field wall.
After the Golden Gophers got a run back in the bottom of the first, Creighton manufactured a run in the second on a leadoff wallk to Brett Murray, a sacrifice and an RBI single from senior Brad McKewon.
MInnesota made it 3-2 with a run in the second, but sophomore Matt Warren came on in relief to hold the lead for the Bluejays.
Still up 3-2 entering the top of the fourth, sophomore Reagan Fowler drew a leadoff walk. Two outs later, sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald also worked a free pass to put runners at first and second. Once more McKewon answered the call by slapping an RBI double down the left field line. With Fitzgerald on third and McKewon at second, Clouthier blasted his first career home run to make it 7-2.
Creighton added an a run on a single, two ground outs and a wild pitch in the sixth and put the game away with three runs in the ninth.
Warren earned the win for the Bluejays, allowing two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of relief. Minnesota starter, Jordan Jess, took the loss (0-1) allowing four runs on three hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Peter led the Bluejay offense with three hits (3-of-5) and three RBI, while McKewon, Fowler, Murray and senior Mike Gerber each finished with two hits.
Creighton and Minnesota wrap up the three-game series with the rubber game on Sunday, Feb. 23 at 12 pm.
