NEW YORK – Former Creighton men's soccer captain Zach Barnes was selected by D.C. United in the third round of the 2014 Major League Soccer (MLS) Draft Tuesday afternoon.
Formerly known as the supplemental draft, the third and fourth rounds of the MLS SuperDraft were conducted on Tuesday. D.C. United selected Barnes with the 56th overall pick. He joins former teammate Eric Miller as the second Bluejay drafted in the 2014 SuperDraft.
Last month Barnes earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Great Lakes Region Third Team as a midfielder. He started all 20 contests for CU and played every minute of seven of the Bluejays’ nine BIG EAST contests this season, while only spending 28 minutes on the sidelines.
The Flower Mound, Texas, native scored his first goal in a Creighton uniform off of a penalty kick in a 2-1 overtime victory at Old Dominion this season. Barnes also assisted on two goals and finished the year with four points for the Jays. The 2013 senior captain claimed All-BIG EAST First Team honors last month to close out his career in Omaha.
In just two years at Creighton, Barnes played 44 matches and amassed four career points with a goal and two assists. He was a mainstay on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Top 100 to Watch lists in each of the past two seasons after transferring from SMU. Barnes claimed Ameritas Classic All-Tournament Team as well as Creighton Invitational All-Tournament Team honors as a junior. He also started in the 2012 NCAA College Cup during his stay in Omaha.
Barnes is the third Bluejay to be selected by United all-time. He joins Tony Schmitz (2008) and Creighton’s first MLS draft pick Brain Kamler (1996).
Creighton was one of 15 schools to have multiple players selected in this year’s 76-pick SuperDraft. The selections mark the third straight SuperDraft that Creighton has had multiple players selected.
Creighton remains the only college program in the nation to have at least one player drafted into MLS since the league's inception in 1996. With Barnes’ selection, 33 Bluejays have been drafted by MLS.
