No. 19 Nebraska Too Much for Women's Basketball

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 22-5 run spanning halftime led the No. 19 Nebraska women's basketball team to a 63-38 victory over visiting Creighton on Saturday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena in Lincoln, Neb.

Nebraska improved to 8-2 on the season and is now 21-1 in Lincoln against Creighton. The Bluejays dropped to 4-5, coming up short in its attempt to topple a ranked Husker squad for a second straight season.

Hailie Sample, who had a career-high 20 points in Omaha last year vs. Creighton, had a season-high 13 points for the Cornhusker women while Emily Cady added a game-best 14.

Nebraska got a traditional three-point play from Sample with 2:26 left in the first half to take a 33-24 lead, only to have CU respond with a three-ball by Sammy Jensen. Sample answered two trips later with a backdoor lay-up and the teams would go to intermission with NU in front, 35-27.

The Huskers were paced by nine points each from Sample and Cady in the first half, while Alyssa Kamphaus led the Jays with eight points in the opening stanza.

Creighton held Nebraska scoreless on its first three possessions of the second half before All-American Jordan Hooper made her first field goal of the day, and Tear'a Laudermill scored in transition to move NU's lead to 39-27 and force a Bluejay timeout. Creighton would miss its first nine shots of the second half, falling behind 45-27 before finally finding the bottom of the net on a Jensen trifecta with 13:55 left in the game.

Creighton would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way, shooting just 4-for-35 in the second half.

Kamphaus had eight points and seven rebounds to lead Creighton. Janning added eight points. Jensen's six points were a season-high. Creighton outrebounded the Cornhuskers, 41-39, but shot 23.1 percent on the day (15-65).

The Huskers got 13 points from Sample, 14 from Emily Cady and 11 by Brandi Jeffrey.  Hooper had a season-low five points, but added a season-best with 15 rebounds.

Creighton returns to action with three games next weekend at the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas, beginning Thursday, Dec. 19 with a 9:30 pm (CT) game vs. Clemson.
