OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton All-American Doug McDermott has begun his senior season the same way he ended his junior season, with Conference and National Player of the Week honors. In honors released Monday morning, McDermott was named National Player of the Week from ESPN.com's Andy Katz, as well as BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week.
McDermott averaged 25.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in three Creighton wins to start the season. McDermott made 55.8 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from three-point land, and 78.6 percent of his free throw attempts.
McDermott opened his season with 20 points in 20 minutes during a 46-point win over Alcorn State. The Preseason BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year had 18 points in the opening half as Creighton built a 52-36 halftime lead and cruised to victory.
Three days later McDermott had 37 points in 31 minutes of play in a 26-point victory over UMKC. McDermott had all 37 points in the first 28 minutes of the game, connecting on 15-of-25 field goals, including 5-10 from three-point range, as well as a pair of free throws. He also snared seven rebounds.
McDermott capped off his hot start with 20 points and five rebounds in an 83-79 win at Saint Joseph’s, helping Creighton overcome a 13-point deficit. McDermott’s traditional three-point play with 4.9 seconds left was his first career game-winner and came after the Bluejays had surrendered the lead just 23 seconds earlier.
Last year McDermott was named ESPN.com's Co-National Player of the Week and Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week on March 3 after a 41-point performance vs. Wichita State that clinched a regular-season title for the Bluejays.
This is McDermott's 14th career Conference Player of the Week honor, with the first 13 coming from the MVC office. He also earned MVC Newcomer of the Week accolades seven times as a freshman in 2010-11.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Tulsa in a game scheduled for a 2:32 p.m. tip-off.
