OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 match to Butler in overtime on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 9-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the BIG EAST. Butler, meanwhile, moved to 11-5-2 on the season and 4-4 in BIG EAST action.
Despite being outshot 8-0 in the opening period, Creighton and Butler battled through an evenly controlled first 45 minutes.
The Bluejays rallied in the second half, creating five shots. Creighton's first scoring chance came on set play following a Butler foul. The first chance presented itself in the 55th minute as sophomore Jill Richgels sent a direct kick to senior Kelsey O'Donnell, but her shot was blocked over the goal and out of bounds. The next near miss for the Bluejays came in the 73rd minute as freshman Lauren Sullivan used her speed to create a shot from just inside the box. Sullivan's one-touch attempt sailed high.
The match moved to overtime, where Butler capitalized in the 95th minute, when Kelly Mahoney sent a pass from near midfield from left to a streaking Katie Griswold. The pass created a crossing shot for Griswold that just slipped past Creighton freshman goalkeeper Danielle Rice.
Rice nabbed eight saves in the loss, while Butler keeper, Julie Burton, made one save to earn the win.
Creighton was officially eliminated from the BIG EAST tournaement with the loss. Creighton will wrap up the 2013 season on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. against Xavier.
