With no singles matches scheduled on the day, the teams focused on doubles play. Two Bluejay tandems claimed first-round victories to begin the tournament.
In doubles Flight A, CU senior Billy Paluch and sophomore Brandon Lee paired up to dominate a duo from Northern Colorado, 8-1. Paluch and Lee later fell 8-4 in the second round to a team from Northern Illinois.
The pairing of Creighton sophomore Quinn Dippel and freshman Aaron Chalstrom claimed an 8-5 victory over another Northern Colorado tandem in the first round of doubles Flight B. Dippel and Chalstrom later dropped an 8-5 decision to a team from Gustavus Adolphus in round two.
Three other squads featuring Bluejays bounced back with consolation wins after initial setbacks in their respective first-round main draw matches.
In Flight B action, Creighton junior Elliott Baker and freshman Harrison Lang ended their day with an 8-7 victory over a North Dakota pairing after finding themselves on the wrong side of that 8-7 margin earlier in the day to a team from UMKC.
A pairing of CU sophomore Anthony Rauschenbach and Daniil Ivanov of UMKC began the day with an 8-6 setback to a duo from Omaha in Flight B. Rauschenbach and his teammate for the day later knocked off a Northern Colorado pairing 8-5 to conclude the day.
Each of Creighton’s doubles tandems completed competition with a 1-1 record at the Invitational.
First-round main draw singles action begins the day on Saturday. Two more rounds of play will follow as well as consolation matches throughout the day at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
