Castro’s goal completed a Creighton (4-0-0) come-from-behind victory over Old Dominion (1-2-0) after the Bluejays trailed in a match for the first time this season. It marked Castro’s first goal of the year. The score was Castro’s third tally and second game-winner in a Creighton uniform. Sophomore Vincent Keller earned the assist on the clincher, his second helper of the season.
The victory improves Creighton’s all-time record as the top-ranked team in the nation to 9-1-1. It also lifted the Jays’ overtime record to 9-0-6 in the last 15 matches that went into extra time dating back to September 2010. The Bluejays evened the series with ODU at 1-1-0 after the Monarchs won in Omaha last season by the same 2-1 margin.
Old Dominion scored first on a penalty kick in the 35th minute off the foot of Ivan Militar, his second goal of the season. It marked the first time this year that Creighton trailed in a match and the first time the Jays trailed at the half in 2013.
CU withstood the Monarch attack in the first half, fending off 11 ODU shots while the Bluejays managed two shot attempts in the opening 45 minutes.
Creighton bounced back to knot the score at 1-1 early in the second half in the 59th minute on a penalty kick conversion of its own. CU senior Zach Barnes blasted his PK attempt past the reach of Monarch goalkeeper Sean Stowe. It marked Barnes’ first goal of the season. The score was also Barnes’ first in a Creighton uniform. He scored six total goals in two previous seasons at SMU.
Junior Alex Bolowich made five saves en route to his fourth victory of the year in goal for the Jays to improve to 4-0-0 on the season. Stowe made three saves for the Monarchs and dropped to 1-1-0 in 2013.
The Jays took five shots in overtime and held ODU to just one attempt to close the shot margin to 20-13 in favor of the Monarchs. Old Dominion also edged Creighton in corner kicks, 8-6.
