OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men’s basketball team finalized its 2013-14 schedule with today’s announcement of its first BIG EAST Conference slate. The Bluejays will play each of its nine new league foes twice each as part of the conference’s double round-robin format.
Creighton’s first game in its new league will see the Bluejays host defending BIG EAST co-champion Marquette on New Year’s Eve (Dec. 31). It will be the 77th meeting between the schools, but first since a 1998 meeting in the NIT.
Creighton’s first BIG EAST road trip will take the team to Seton Hall for a Jan. 4 contest before staying on the road until visiting Chicago for a Jan. 7 game at DePaul.
The Bluejays return home on Jan. 12 and 14 to host Xavier and Butler, respectively, before making an extended trip to the East Coast for a road swing at Providence (Jan. 18) and at Villanova (Jan. 20). The Villanova contest will be played at Wells Fargo Center, where CU played a pair of NCAA Tournament games in March. Georgetown visits CenturyLink Center Omaha on Jan. 25, and three days later St. John’s does the same as CU closes out the first half of league play.
A trip to Omaha from DePaul opens the second half of league play on Feb. 7 before another two-game road trip. That trip will feature two historic venues, with a visit to Madison Square Garden to take on St. John’s (Feb. 9) before trekking to Hinkle Fieldhouse to meet Butler (Feb. 13).
Villanova comes to Omaha on Feb. 16, followed by a trip to Milwaukee to meet Marquette on Feb. 19. CU wraps up play in February on the 23rd with a home game vs. Seton Hall.
Creighton opens March with a challenging road swing, visiting Xavier (March 1) and Georgetown (March 4), before wrapping up the regular-season on March 8 vs. Providence.
Creighton’s non-conference schedule was previously announced in mid-July. The team’s only public exhibition game will be held on Friday, Nov. 1, when the Jays host Division II Northern State. Regular-season play starts one week later when CU hosts Alcorn State on Nov. 8.
Additional television and starting time updates for non-conference games will be posted to the men’s basketball schedule page on GoCreighton.com as they become available.
Creighton returns four starters from a team that went 28-8 last season and swept MVC regular-season and tournament titles in 2012-13. For ticket information, fans can call (402) 280-JAYS.
