LOGAN, Utah - The Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss in the 2013 season opening match at Utah State on Friday, Aug. 23.
The Aggies struck early with goals in the sixth and 14th minute to take command. Utah State's first goal came at 5:16 as Lauren Roundy sailed a shot into the upper left corner of the net. Roundy was able to grab a pass from Jayne Robison, then broke past a Bluejay defender to give Utah State the early lead.
Moments later, Kylie Dibb was able to blast a shot from 20 yards away at the 13:01 mark to make it 2-0.
The final goal of the match came late in the first period as Utah State's Jessica Brooksby touched a pass from Brooke Larsen-Leavitt into the back of the net with 32:15 showing on the clock.
The Bluejays outshot Utah State 6-5 in the first half, but Aggie keeper Jeannie Woller stymied Creighton throughout the match. The Jays raised their level of play in the second period, firing off eight shots but were unable to penetrate Woller as she nabbed seven saves to collect the shutout.
Starting in goal in her first collegiate contest, Creighton freshman Danielle Rice struggled in the opening moments, but rallied to record four saves, including three in a scoreless second period for the Jays.
"I'm disappointed with the loss today because we outshot a very good team but did not compete at the level we need to," said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. "We will move on and learn from the many mistakes we made today."
Senior Kelsey O'Donnell led the attack for the Jays, finishing with a team-best five shots in the loss. The Jays return to the pitch on Sunday, Aug. 25 as Creighton travels to face Boise State at 12 p.m.
