Matt Rogers Named Cross Country Head Coach

OMAHA, Neb. -- Matt Rogers has been promoted to head coach of the Creighton men's and women's cross country programs.

Rogers served as a volunteer coach with the Bluejays last fall and has been serving as the interim head coach for both teams since Chas Davis resigned.

"Accepting this position was a very easy decision for myself and my wife," said Rogers. "Ever since we arrived in Omaha and at Creighton, we have felt that this is our new home and we are supposed to be here. Every day at Creighton is a blessing and an opportunity."

“We’re excited about the opportunity to promote Matt Rogers to be the head coach of our cross country programs,” said CU Associate Athletic Director Mark Burgers. “He has previous head coaching experience and developed strong relationships with our student-athletes while serving in a coaching capacity with our program last season.”

Rogers arrived at Creighton after serving as a volunteer coach at St. Joseph's Academy in St. Augustine, Fla., from 2010-12. During that same span, he served as head coach and co-founder of the North Florida Track Club.

In 2006 Rogers started TrainSmart Sports, a company which was created in order to coach runners and triathletes who wanted to pursue a higher level of competition.

Rogers also served as an assistant cross country and track & field coach at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando, Fla., from 2002-04 and was Vice President of the University of Central Florida Triathlon Team for three years.

"I think about the future of the team often," continued Rogers. "We intend to grow this team into a knowledgeable and passionate one who together respects and enjoys the gift of running. Our approach to training will be gradual and patient. We are currently a young team that will need to focus on maturity as we will be looking for freshmen and sophomores to step into leadership roles. I believe in this team and the supporters of the program and look forward to building relationships within our new conference."

Rogers earned his bachelor of science degree in Industrial Engineering from UCF in 2006, and his wife's name is Courtney.

Creighton's men finished ninth in the Missouri Valley Conference a year ago, while the women claimed 10th at The Valley Championships. Creighton joined the BIG EAST Conference on July 1.
