OMAHA, Neb - Creighton baseball senior Alex Staehely earned 2013 Capital One Academic All-District VII First Team honors as voted on by CoSIDA on Thursday, May 2.
The Academic All-District selection is Staehely's first national honor, but the Illinois native earned 2012 MVC (Missouri Valley Conference) Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention and was on the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team in 2011.
This season, Staehely earned his second MVC Player of the Week at the outset of the 2013 season (Feb. 22) and also named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
A four-year starter for the Bluejays, Staehely is climbing the program record book. Entering the weekend he is second in assists (606), fifth in sacrifice flys (14) and second in sac bunts (41). Hitting in the middle of the order this season, Staehely has a .258 average with 32 hits and is third for the Jays with 25 RBI.
Staehely boasts 186 hits in his career, including 46 doubles and 11 home runs.
As a First Team All-District member Staehely will be placed on a national ballot for a chance to be recognized as an Academic All-America selection while competing against student-athletes from across the country.
Staehely carries a 3.65 grade point average in acoounting and finance.
The last time a Bluejay earned an Academic All-District First Team selection was Nick Judkins in 2012.
Staehely and the Jays travel to Normal, Ill., this weekend for a three-game set with the MVC leader, Illinois State, beginning Friday, May 3 at 6:00 p.m.
