Men's Tennis Signs Familiar Name in Two-Time Kansas State Champion

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's tennis head coach Tom Lilly announced Jake Norman, a senior from Wichita, Kan., and younger brother of current CU senior Ryan Norman, signed a National Letter of Intent this week to play tennis for the Bluejays beginning in the fall of 2013.

Currently playing in his senior season at the Independent School in Wichita, Norman is undefeated in 2013 and has dropped only two matches in his three-year high school career.

Norman is a two-time Class 3A singles state champion in Kansas in both his sophomore and freshman campaigns. He led his team to a pair of league championships in both seasons, a state runner-up showing as a freshman and a Class 3A state title as a sophomore.

According to the national recruiting site TennisRecruiting.net, Norman is the No. 2 men's prospect in the state of Kansas and ranks fourth overall in the Plains region consisting of several states.  He is listed as a four-star recruit out of a possible five stars on the site.

The 6-4 incoming freshman has played tennis since an early age dating back almost 15 years. Norman’s older brother Ryan is about to complete his four-year Bluejay career this weekend at the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. His father and coach Simon played tennis at Wichita State and played professionally in tour events.

Norman has also played some junior events with great success. He is the 2012 Missouri Valley Supers champion. Norman also competed as a Missouri Valley National Team member in 2010-12. He has been consistently ranked No. 1 in the region in each age division. Currently he is ranked No. 4 in the 18-and-under boys’ regional rankings.

"We are very happy that Jake chose Creighton and our men’s tennis program over many other strong programs," Lilly said.  "It says a lot about Creighton and our program that parents Simon and Laura Norman have seen one child come through that is now ready to graduate in Ryan, and now are sending his younger brother Jake here for his career.

“The Normans are a very well-known tennis family in the Midwest and we are very excited to enter the Big East Conference next year with Jake playing and his parents and older brother as still a big part of Creighton tennis.  Jake will be very valuable to our team right away as a freshman."

Norman did not play as a junior in high school but did take part in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pan-American Championships in fall 2011 at Tulsa University. There he beat four international players ranked among the top 400 in the world junior standings. Norman won three rounds of qualifying and a first-round match before falling to the top junior player from Canada in the second round.

He also reached the sweet 16 of the Junior National Clay Court Championships in Florida out of a draw of 256 players.

Norman is also successful off the court. He has won multiple student-athlete academic awards and has taken several AP and honors courses. He is actively involved in the Environmental Action Club, in the theatre program and as a Young Life  Youth Leader. In the community he has logged hundreds of hours volunteering as a youth tennis mentor a swim club timer and at a local soup kitchen.

The three-time team captain is still undecided on a major. He is the son of Simon and Laura Norman.

"I am extremely happy to be joining the Creighton men's team this fall,” said Norman. “I am hungry for the deep competition in the Big East. It is an exciting time to be a Bluejay."

Norman chose Creighton over offers from Central Florida, Denver and Wichita State.

Norman joins Harrison Lang who signed with CU last fall as the second men's player from the 2013 high school senior class to sign a National Letter of Intent to play tennis at Creighton.
