ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Sarah Nelson and senior Ally Jensen were named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete teams for women's basketball on Tuesday, March 12. The Scholar-Athlete teams are voted on by the league's sports information directors.
Nelson was selected to the MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team for the second consecutive year, while A. Jensen earned Second Team honors.
Nelson, who also was selected to the Scholar-Athlete First Team last season, majors in pre-health sciences and finance. She currently sports a 3.7 GPA and equally excels on the court, scoring 12.1 points per game and leading the Jays with 7.9 rebounds per contest. The forward is adept at finding her teammates as well, collecting 104 assists. She is the top rated post player in assist-to-turnover rating in the NCAA at 1.86, overall Nelson ranks 46th in the country.
A. Jensen, who carries a 3.65 GPA in nursing, is second on the team with 65 three-pointers this season and ranks fifth in Creighton histoty with 213 treys in her career. The senior guard is fourth on the team in points per game at 7.9 and is third in rebounding at 4.1 per game.
The No. 2 seeded Bluejays (23-6) are preparing for their MVC Tournament quarterfinal game on Friday, March 15 at 6:05 pm against the winner of the first round game between No. 10 Southern Illinois (4-25) and No. 7 Evansville (9-20). That game will be played on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
The criteria for the scholar-athlete team balloting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves, have played at least 75 percent of a team’s games, and must carry at least a 3.20 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).
Student-athletes must also have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their institution (true and redshirt freshmen are not eligible) and must have completed at least one full academic year at the institution.
A total of 38 Valley student-athletes met the nomination criteria for scholar-athlete honors in 2013.
