Changstrom Claims MVC Pitcher of the Week Honors

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Creighton softball junior Becca Changstrom claimed Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time in three weeks after recording a pair of complete-game shutout wins at the Rebel Spring Games last weekend.

It marks the fourth career MVC Pitcher of the Week accolade for Changstrom she earned the honor two weeks ago after her performance at the Central Arkansas Tournament. Previously she won a single conference weekly honor in each of the past two seasons. The weekly award is the second of the season for Changstrom and the Bluejays. Creighton players won a total four weekly honors in 2012.

The award also marks the third straight week that the Valley recognized Changstrom. Last week she claimed MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week accolades after a solid weekend at the UT Arlington Maverick Invitational.

Changstrom continued her dominance in the circle last weekend with two shutout complete-game wins at the Rebel Spring Games to go 2-0 on the weekend. She posted a perfect 0.00 ERA through two games allowing a total of six hits in two starts.

On Saturday, Changstrom kept Saint Francis off the scoreboard in the Bluejays' tournament-opening 2-0 win. The right-hander allowed four hits to the Red Flash while racking up eight strikeouts and yielding one walk.

Against Butler on Sunday the Lincoln, Neb., native notched a two-hitter. Changstrom charted 10 strikeouts and did not surrender a base on balls in a 3-0 victory over the Bulldogs.

On the weekend she held opposing batters to just a .122 clip at the plate. In 2013 opposing batters are hitting just .194 against Changstrom, a mark that leads the conference.

Changstrom improved to 7-3 overall this season with the victories. She also boasts the Bluejays' only save this season.

In 11 appearances that include over 66 innings of work, Changstrom's 1.69 ERA leads the MVC. Her 78 strikeouts this season is tied for the Valley lead while she claims sole possession of first in the MVC at 8.23 strikeouts per game.

This season Changstrom has notched 10 K's or more on three different occasions. The rest of the league owns just four outings total with 10 or more strikeouts. No other MVC pitcher can claim more than one such effort in 2013.

Creighton resumes play at the Rebel Spring Games beginning at 2 p.m. CT Tuesday with a contest against Youngstown State before battling Fairleigh Dickinson in the second game of a doubleheader slated for 4 p.m.
