DALLAS, Texas - After claiming slugfests in the first two games of
the series, the Creighton baseball squad grinded out a 3-1 over Dallas Baptist
on Sunday, Feb. 17 to claim the series sweep.
Creighton moved to 3-0 in 2013, while Dallas Baptist fell to 0-3. It
is the first series sweep for Creighton since the Jays took the first three
games from Central Arkansas to open the 2012 season.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, senior Mark Winkelman
came on from the pen with runners at first and second and just one out.
Winkelman walked the first man he faced to load the bases, but worked out of
the jam by inducing a force out and retiring former Husker Boomer Collins on
strikes to end the threat.
Winkelman's rush of emotion carried over to the Jays' bats as Creighton
promptly grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth. Junior Brad McKewon
legged out a double to right field to open the frame. McKewon went to
third on an errant pickoff attempt, then junior Federico
Castagnini drew a walk to put runners at the corners.
Sophomore Jake Peter
slapped an RBI single up the middle to tie the game and send Castagnini to
third. One out later, senior Alex Staehely
drove home Castagnini on a single to left to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
The Jays added an insurance run in the eighth on an RBI double from
Staehely, but that proved to be more than Winkelman needed as the left-hander
held the Patriots scoreless for the final 4.2 to earn his first win (1-0) of
Winkelman allowed just four hits and two walks in 4.2 innings, recording
three strikeouts to earn the victory. Dallas Baptist's Cory Taylor took
the loss, surrendering two runs on four hits and one walk in five innings of
Bluejay starter, freshman Matt Warren,
allowed one run on three hits in four innings. Staehely finished the game
3-for-3 with two RBI, while Peter was 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Bluejays return to action on Friday, Feb. 22 in the YMBL Cardinal
Classic, hosted by Lamar University, in Beaumont, Texas. The Jays open
the tournament against Washington at 2 p.m., then face Lamar at 6 p.m.
