Jays WBB Downed by Indiana State, 58-41
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Creighton women's basketball team were held to its lowest point total of the season as the Jays fell to Indiana State, 58-41, on Friday, Feb. 8.
The loss dropped the Jays to 16-5 overall and 8-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). Indiana State, meanwhile, moved to 13-8 on the season and 5-5 in the MVC.
Trailing 10-4 with 12:24 on the clock the Jays rattled off eight straight to take a 12-10 lead. Junior Jordan Garrison provided five quick points to start the rally, then freshman Marissa Janning connected from long range to push Creighton to a 12-10 lead with 10:10 left on the clock.
Unfortunately the Jays did not hit another bucket the rest of the way, watching the Sycamores go on an 18-0 run. Just 10 seconds before the break, Janning ended the run with two free throws as Creighton trailed 28-14.
After posting its highest scoring half of the season in its last contest, the Jays hit a season low of 14 in a half on 4-of-26 from the field (15.4%) in the first half. Creighton misfired on its final 11 shots of the period.
The Sycamores continued to push their advantage in the opening moments of period number two, growing their lead to 18 at 34-16 with 17:28 remaining.
The mountain provide to high to hurdle for Creighton as the Bluejays got no closer than 10 in the final frame.
Creighton shot a season low 22.8% in the game (13-of-57), including 5-of-27 from beyond the arc (18.5%).
Janning led the Jays with 15 points, while junior McKenzie Fujan chipped in nine.
Indiana State had three players finish in double figures, led by 14 points from Racheal Mahan and Taylor Whitley. Mariana Laramie rounded out the Sycamores in double-figures with 10 points.
The Jays return to action on Sunday, Feb. 10 as Creighton heads to Normal, Ill. to face Illinois State at 2 p.m.
