OMAHA, Neb. -- Austin Chatman had a career-high 16 points and Doug McDermott contributed 25 points as No. 21/17 Creighton defeated Bradley, 75-58, before 18,111 fans on Saturday at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
CU's victory, coupled with Wichita State's 57-52 loss at Northern Iowa, moves the Jays back into sole possession of the MVC standings.
Creighton (20-3, 9-2 MVC) joined the 20-win club for the
14th time in 15 seasons and 25th time overall, and joined Gonzaga and Michigan for the national lead with 20 wins this season. Bradley (13-10, 5-6 MVC) has now lost its
last 15 trips to Omaha against Creighton.
In addition to the scoring from McDermott and Chatman, Gregory Echenique had 10 points and three blocked shots. Creighton shot 50.9 percent for the game and made 12-of-31 three-pointers for the afternoon. The Jays were also perfect in seven free-throw attempts on the afternoon.
Bradley was led by 18 points from Dyricus Simms-Edwards, while Walt Lemon Jr. (15) and Tyshon Pickett (11) also reached double-figures in scoring.
Creighton led most of the first half before an 8-0 Bradley run gave the visitors their first lead at 21-20. The Jays answered with the next five points, only to surrender a half-ending 9-2 run and be trailing 30-27 at the intermission.
After attempting 21 of its 29 first-half shots from behind the arc, Creighton pounded the ball inside early and often in the second stanza. The Jays scored the first eight points, on two McDermott lay-ups and two Echenique scores. The Braves would not lead again.
Creighton's 53-48 lead with 9:10 to play surged to 65-48 thanks to a 12-0 run. A three-pointer from Chatman started the flurry, and McDermott scored the next nine points. By the time Bradley dented the scoreboard again, it was down 65-50 with less than five minutes remaining.
Trailing 20-15 on the glass at halftime, Creighton outrebounded BU 18-4 after the intermission.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday when it plays at Indiana State in a 6:05 pm game. The Sycamores can move into a tie for second-place on Saturday night with a win at Drake.
