DES MOINES, Iowa (Jan. 19) - Creighton men's tennis players finished day two of the 2013 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Individual Tennis Championships held at Drake's Roger Knapp Tennis Center Saturday.
The Bluejays were active on both the doubles and singles courts Saturday. Creighton senior Sean Mathison advanced to a singles final and teamed up with freshman Nick Thompson to move on to a doubles semifinal. The CU duo of senior Billy Paluch and freshman Brandon Lee also advanced to the semis.
Creighton senior Sean Mathison claimed a spot in the Flight 5 singles final slated for Sunday after defeating Justin Abrams of Bradley 6-2, 6-4.The win sets up a rematch between Mathison and Drake's Ben Mullis - the No. 109 ranked player in the nation. Mullis won the pool play matchup on Friday 6-1, 6-1.
Mathison and Thompson earned a doubles semifinal slot in Flight 3 after a 1-1 day. The Bluejay pair beat Southern Illinois' Opieczonek and Spahic 8-3 before dropping a match by the same score to Bradley's Davis and Romanet. The CU duo faces Drake's Tesmer and Lott in Sunday's semifinal.
In Flight 1 doubles action, Paluch and Lee punched a ticket to the semis with a 1-1 record. Salibasic and McKie of Drake topped the Bluejay duo 8-4 but the Creighton tandem rebounded to edge Bradley's Albitar and Weerasinghe 8-7 (5). The Jays battle Pelaez and Eisner of Illinois State Sunday in a semifinal.
The Creighton tandem of sophomore Elliott Baker and senior Ryan Norman came up short in Flight 2 play. The Bluejays fell 8-3 to Goodman and Erasmus of Drake before a tight 8-7 loss to Wichita State's Pereira and Gutierrez.
In other CU singles semifinal action No. 91 Paluch dropped a 6-3, 7-6 match to Matheus Pereira of Wichita State in Flight 1 while freshman Quinn Dippel fell 6-2, 6-1 to Ben Lott of Drake in Flight 6.
Five Jays were on the court for singles consolation matches. Freshman Anthony Rauschenbach posted the lone CU win 7-5, 6-1 over SIU's Orhan Spahic in Flight 7. Norman and Thompson split sets to open their matches before falling in third-set superbreakers in Flight 3 and Flight 7, respectively.
The Bluejays conclude the Championships tomorrow with semifinal doubles matches followed by finals in both singles and doubles beginning at 9 a.m.
