MAC Hermann Trophy Press Conference to be Streamed Live Friday
ST. LOUIS (Jan. 10) - Creighton men's soccer fans will be able to watch a live stream of the MAC Hermann Trophy press conference early Friday evening as the Missouri Athletic Club presents the crystal soccer ball trophy to the top collegiate soccer player in the country. CU senior Jose Gomez is one of three finalists for the 2012 men's MAC Hermann Trophy.
Joining Gomez as finalists for this season's MAC Hermann Trophy are Ryan Finley of Notre Dame and Patrick Mullins of Maryland. The winner will be announced at a press conference at the MAC from 5:45-6 p.m. CST. A live stream of the press conference will be carried on the MAC Hermann Trophy website: http://machermanntrophy.lockerdome.com/
Former Hermann Trophy recipient Johnny Torres will represent the Creighton coaching staff in support of Gomez this weekend. The former All-America selection and current CU assistant coach returns to the MAC after claiming the award following his senior season in Omaha in 1997.
Gomez' selection as a finalist marks the second consecutive season that a Bluejay has made the final three. In 2011, Ethan Finlay was the MAC Trophy runner-up. Bluejay greats Keith DeFini, Brian Kamler, Richard Mulrooney, Ross Paule and Mike Tranchilla were all finalists for the award, while Torres won the award in 1997.
Earlier this month Gomez claimed Soccer America MVP First team honors as a midfielder. In December, Gomez claimed National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-America First Team honors and All-Midwest Region accolades as well as a College Soccer News All-America team selection. The senior co-captain led the Bluejays to the College Cup in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.
Gomez is the reigning 2012 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Player of the Year and 2012 MVC Tournament MVP after helping the Jays claim their 13th Valley tournament championship and 20th NCAA Tournament appearance.
The 2012 First Team All-MVC selection started all 24 matches for the Bluejays this season. Gomez finished the year ranked No. 20 nationally and led the MVC with nine assists. His last helper came Dec. 2 in an NCAA quarterfinal win at No. 4 seed Connecticut on the game-winning goal scored by Christian Blandon with 90 seconds remaining. The senior completed 2012 at No. 71 in the country and second in the MVC with 21 points this season (6 goals, 9 assists). He launched at least one shot attempt in each match this season and recorded a shot on goal in 16 contests. Earlier this season he earned an assist on all three CU goals at Princeton (10/9), the first Bluejay to accomplish the feat since Nov. 8, 2008.
The MAC Hermann Trophy represents the highest individual achievement in the sport. The winners and finalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy are determined by a vote of Division I coaches who are members of the NSCAA. Also, an online fan vote (the equivalent of one coach's vote) is factored into the final vote total.
Twenty years after Mia Hamm visited the Missouri Athletic Club to receive the Collegiate Soccer Player of the Year Award, she returns to the MAC as the featured speaker of the Hermann Trophy Banquet.
