ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Freshman Marissa Janning earned her second Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Newcomer of the Week honor of 2012-13,on Monday, Dec. 10. The award recognizes Janning for her play during the week of Dec. 3-9.
Janning led the Jays to a 2-0 week, defeating #25 Nebraska 66-57 on Dec. 5 and besting Houston, 75-54 on Dec. 8. Marissa notched 19 points for a second consecutive game to lead the Jays past #25 Nebraska on Dec. 5, tying a career-high that she had set in Creighton's previous game against BYU (Nov. 28th, 65-62 win in overtime). Janning helped the Jays defeat the Huskers for the first-time in seven seasons and pushed Creighton to its first victory over a ranked opponent since 2008. Three days later Marissa posted 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds in the Jays' 75-54 win at Houston on Dec. 8.
Janning led Creighton with 34 points in the two games, she also notched six assists and grabbed nine rebounds. She was 12-of-22 from the field (.545), 8-of-13 (.615) from three-point land and the point guard committed just one turnover in a combined 49 minutes of play.
With two Newcomer of the Week honors, Janning remains seven behind the record nine awards claimed by teammate Carli Tritz during the 2010-11 season. Janning and the rest of the Bluejays (5-2) have a few days off for Finals, before Creighton hosts North Dakota State at 2:05 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16.
