LINCOLN, Neb. -- Behind a combined 39 points from junior Doug McDermott and senior
Gregory Echenique, the No. 16 Creighton men’s basketball team earned a 64-42
victory over Nebraska on Thursday, Dec. 6. The Jays 22-point victory is the largest
margin of victory for the Jays in Lincoln, passing an 11-point Creighton win on
Jan. 2, 2001 (62-51)
The win lifted the Jays to 8-1 on the season, while Nebraska
fell to 6-2.
Creighton has now won 11 of the past 14 regular-season
match-ups with Nebraska and snapped a three-game losing streak in Lincoln.
Both teams struggled from the field in the opening 10
minutes, shooting a combined 7-of-27 (25.9%) from the field.Creighton forced Nebraska into six early
fouls and held a 10-8 lead with 10:13 remaining in the opening period.
With the score at 14-12 moments later, the Jays
created the first separation of the game with a five point burst via a
three-pointer from junior Ethan Wragge and a dunk by Echenique to enter the final
five minutes of the half up 19-12.
Coming out of a media timeout, senior Grant Gibbs found
Echenique wide open for a two-handed flush from the left to push the Jays’ lead

Shields ended the Creighton run at seven, but the Jays pushed their lead to
double digits at 28-17 at the break.
The Jays finished the first half 10-of-27 from the floor
(37%), while Nebraska was just 7-of-28 (25%).
After each team converted a couple of easy layup to start
the half, Nebraska head coach Tim Miles drew a technical foul arguing for a
traveling violation.McDermott drained
both foul shots to push Creighton’s lead to 15, 36-21 at the 17:31 mark.
The Bluejays began to assert themselves as the second half
continued, pushing the lead to 21-points on a Wragge triple with 10:26 left at
51-30. Nebraska got as no closer than 17 the rest of the way.
McDermott's 27 points moved him into 10th on Creighton's
all-time scoring chart, surpassing Benoit Benjamin (1982-85) with 1,579.Echenique finished with 12 points and 12
rebounds for his second double-double of 2012-12 and the 13th of his
Dylan Talley led the Huskers with 14 points, while Brandon Ubel finished with 10 points. NU shot 32.1 percent from the floor and made just 2-of-6 free throws. Nebraska's 42 points were the fewest against Creighton since March 4, 1932.
With the victory, Greg McDermott became the first head coach in Creighton history to win
two of his first three games against Nebraska and became the
third-quickest coach in Creighton history to 60 wins (83 games) with
Creighton returns to action on Sunday with a
1:05 pm home game vs. Akron. That game can be heard on KXSP (590 AM) and
watched statewide on NET or nationwide on ESPN3.
NOTES: Greg McDermott is now 10-0 in match-ups against Tim
Miles. The coaching pals had previously faced each other in games
involving Wayne State-SW Minnesota State as well as Iowa State-North
Dakota State Creighton has won five straight games against the Big Ten
