Three Men's Soccer Players Earn Accolades after NCAA Third Round Win
OMAHA, Neb. (Nov. 27) - Three Creighton men's soccer players earned recognition as Team of the Week selections on a pair of national websites this week after the Bluejays advanced 5-4 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw at previously top-ranked Akron Nov. 25.
CU freshmen Timo Pitter and Jeff Gal each earned a nod on the College Soccer News National Team of the Week while senior Brent Kallman claimed a spot on the TopDrawerSoccer.com Team of the Week as a defender. The honors are the first for each player from a national website.
Pitter, the Bluejays' leading scorer with 10 goals and 24 points, tapped in the game-tying goal in the 83rd minute against the Zips and then clinched the match with the final successful penalty kick. He currently ranks nationally as the No. 4 freshman and No. 42 overall with 10 goals this season. Pitter is also the No. 5 ranked freshman and is No. 51 overall nationally with 24 points scored in 2012.
Gal kept his record unblemished at 12-0-1 this season after making eight saves on the evening at Akron including a crucial one on a potential game-winning penalty kick early in the first overtime. He currently ranks nationally as the No. 1 freshman and at No. 7 overall with a 0.85 save percentage this season. Gal is also the No. 1 ranked freshman and is No. 8 overall nationally carrying a 0.67 goals against average in 2012.
Kallman played all 110 minutes in the double-overtime victory at Akron, including 19 minutes of overtime when Creighton played a man down. He also led the Bluejays with four shots attempts but none tracked as a shot on goal. Kallman and the Jays defense rank nationally at No. 17 in shutout percentage (0.45), No. 20 in save percentage (0.83) and No. 21 in team goals against average (0.82).
Creighton (16-3-3) is currently on a 13-match unbeaten streak. Since a 2-0 setback at No. 11-seeded Tulsa (Sept. 25) CU is 11-0-2, rattling off 11 straight wins bookended by ties at Drake (Sept. 29) and at No. 5-seeded Akron (Nov. 25).
CU's string of matches without a loss is the longest active unbeaten streak among the eight quarterfinal teams, followed by No. 2-seeded Maryland currently on a five-match win streak. The Bluejays' season-long streak ranks second among quarterfinalists only to the Terrapins who went unbeaten in 16 matches to start 2012.
The Jays moved up three spots to No. 5 in the TopDrawer Soccer rankings this week after advancing 5-4 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw at previously top-ranked Akron Nov. 25.
The Bluejays rank No. 8 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll released Nov. 13. CU earned the No. 12 national seed when the NCAA announced its selections Nov. 12.
