OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team moved up to 11th in both national polls announced on Monday. That's a jump of three spots in the Associated Press poll and one spot in the USA Today coaches poll.
The ascension in the polls comes on the heels of a 3-0 week that included double-digit victories over Longwood, Wisconsin and Arizona State last week.
Creighton is the only MVC team in the top-25 this week, but Wichita State is 28th in the AP poll and 33rd in the coaches poll. Other teams of interest that received votes in both polls are Wisconsin and future Bluejay opponents California and Saint Joseph's.
In addition to the team's success, junior forward Doug McDermott was honored by ESPN analyst Dick Vitale as his National Player of the Week. McDermott scored 30 points against Wisconsin, then added 29 more one night later vs. Arizona State. He also added 17 rebounds on the weekend en route to MVP honors at the Las Vegas Invitational.
McDermott was also named MVC Player of the Week. It's the second time this season he's been honored (also Nov. 12), and seventh honor in his career. In Valley history, only Bradley's Hersey Hawkins (14) and Creighton's Bob Harstad (8) has won the award more.
Creighton hosts Boise State on Wednesday at 7:05 pm at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
