OMAHA, Neb. -- Avery Dingman had 18 points, including 16 in the first half, as the No. 16 Creighton men's basketball team downed University of Mary, 89-51, in exhibition play on Friday.
The crowd of 15,436 was the largest in Creighton history for an exhibiton game.
Dingman nailed his first four shots and scored 13 points during a 17-0 run that turned a 10-10 game into a 27-10 rout.
Creighton would get scoring from five different men during a 16-0 run late in the first half to lead 61-21 at intermission. CU sank 10-of-15 three-pointers in the first half, living up to the hype of one of the nation's most explosive offensives.
The second half saw both times substitute liberally, as Creighton used all 15 men in uniform at least four minutes or more. Mary would score the game's final nine points and outscore CU, 30-28, after intermission, as both teams experimented with their young personnel.
A sophomore from Branson, Mo., Dingman's 18 points in 15 minutes were four more than his regular-season high from a year ago, and tied for game-high honors with reigning MVC Player of the Year Doug McDermott. Josh Jones added 14 points while sinking four three-pointers to open his senior campaign. Will Artino also had an active 15 minutes, finishing with nine points and eight rebounds.
Creighton finished the game with a 49-33 rebound advantage and had 18 assists on 28 baskets against just eight turnovers. CU outscored the Marauders 18-0 off turnovers and outscored UMary 47-24 off the bench.
U-Mary was paced by 13 points from Brandon Tyler, while Alex Dorr had 11. The Marauders are a Division II school from Bismarck, N.D., and coached by former Bluejay Jevin Budde, who received a warm welcome from the Omaha crowd during pre-game introductions.
Creighton opens the regular-season next Friday with a 7:05 pm home game vs. North Texas in a battle of teams picked to win their conferences.
