Led by 54 Points From the Posts, Jays Breeze Past Mustangs, 90-60
OMAHA, Neb. - Led by 54 points from their post players, the Creighton women's basketball squad downed Southwest Minnesota State, 90-60 on Wednesday, Oct. 31.
The Bluejays are 23-1 in their last 24 exhibition contests, dating back to 1998. The Bluejays have won their last 19 exhibition games, including all four played at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The Bluejays continued to pour on the pressure throughout the first half, building a 24-point edge by the break, 48-24. Creighton shot 57.1% from the field in the opening 20 minutes (20-35), including a combined 13-of-17 (.765) from Kamphaus, Nelson and Akin-Otiko.
Southwest Minnesota State (SMSU) opened the second period with a 6-0 run to cut the Jays' lead to 18 on consecutive three-pointers, but that was as close as it would get.
The Jays reasserted their dominance in the second period with 16 points down low, stretching their lead to as much as 34 points in the closing minutes on a three-pointer from Nelson.
Nelson led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-12 from the field, while Akin-Otiko had 18 points on 7-of-10 and Kamphaus finished with 15 points on 7-of-9. SMSU also had three players finish in double figures as Annessa Rosch had 15 points, while Hope Bonlander and Bree Holleman delivered 10 points.
Creighton opens the 2012-13 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 10 as the Jays host No. 12 Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m.
