Creighton Earns First-Round Bye at MVC Tourney after 1-0 Win
OMAHA, Neb. (Oct. 27) - The No. 21 Creighton men's soccer team celebrated senior day by extending its season-best win streak to seven matches after freshman Timo Pitter scored his seventh goal of the season to defeat Missouri State 1-0 at Morrison Stadium Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Jays earned a first-round bye in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament next month in Peoria, Ill. Creighton improved to a 4-0-1 in the conference and moved to 12-3-2 overall on the year. Missouri State was eliminated from MVC tournament contention after the loss, dropping to 0-5 in the MVC and 5-7-4 overall.
In the 20th minute, Pitter made good on a pass from fellow freshman Vincent Keller, scoring on a crossing shot from 10 yards out. Pitter's goal gives him 16 points on the season to tie senior Jose Gomez atop the Creighton stat sheet. Keller's assist marked the second of his young career.
The Jays' defense also extended a pair of shutout streaks in the victory. Creighton held opponents off of the scoreboard for the fifth consecutive match at Morrison Stadium. The last score allowed by CU at home came Sept. 22 versus St. Louis in the 83rd minute. It's been over 473 minutes since Creighton allowed a goal on its home pitch.
CU also extended its shutout streak against MVC foes to 12 consecutive matches. The last score CU allowed to a league opponent came in the conference opener last season (Oct. 12) versus Missouri State at 22:54. It's been nearly 1,273 minutes since the Jays allowed a goal to an MVC team.
Freshman Jeff Gal posted his fifth consecutive shutout, and sixth of the season, for the Jays. He improved his record to 8-0 on the year.
Creighton wraps up the regular-season at Evansville next Saturday, Nov. 3. The Purple Aces could be vying for a first-round bye in the MVC Tournament as well next week.
