Creighton Blanks UMKC 3-0
OMAHA, Neb. (Oct. 16) - The No. 22 Creighton men's soccer team extended its season-best win streak to five matches while converting its third consecutive home shutout as the Jays blanked UMKC 3-0 at Morrison Stadium Tuesday night.
The Bluejays' offense built a two-goal lead in the first 15 minutes while the defense continued to play shutout ball, holding their third consecutive opponent off the scoreboard inside Morrison.
With the win, the Jays improved to 10-3-2 overall while the Kangaroos dropped to 5-7-2 on the season.
Creighton senior Jose Gomez, the reigning National Player of the Week, got the Jays' offense off to an early start. Gomez scored his fourth goal and second game-winner of the season in the third minute of the contest to put Creighton up 1-0 early. Sophomore Jose Ribas notched his fourth assist of 2012 on the crossing pass to Gomez.
CU freshman Timo Pitter netted his third goal in two matches from the left side in the 14th minute of the first half. It marked Pitter's team-high sixth goal of the season.
After the break, freshman Vincent Keller scored his first goal as a Bluejay with the team's final score in the 60th minute. Gomez got on the stat sheet again with his fifth assist in three games and eighth of the season to lead the team. The senior fed the freshman in close to the goal as Keller punched it into the net.
Gomez and Pitter continue to pace the Creighton offense in points with 16 and 14, respectively.
Freshman Jeff Gal posted his third consecutive shutout, and fourth of the season, for the Jays. Gal raised his unblemished record to 6-0 on the year.
With the 3-0 win, Creighton extended its shutout streak to three consecutive home matches. The last score allowed by CU came Sept. 22 versus St. Louis in the 83rd minute. It's been over 293 minutes since Creighton allowed a goal inside Morrison.
The victory combined with the Jays' 3-0 win at Central Arkansas (Oct. 13) and their 3-2 overtime victory at Princeton (Oct. 9) marked the first time since 2005 that the Jays' offense scored three or more goals in three consecutive matches.
CU battles MVC rival Bradley as part of a doubleheader at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, following the Creighton women's soccer team's match with Evansville in its regular-season home finale.
The matches coincide with the Jays' SocctoberFest, a celebration of the Creighton men's and women's soccer programs. The event is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. inside a heated tent on the lawn just west of the Morrison Stadium main entrance. Walk-ins are welcome but to register and purchase your SocctoberFest tickets in advance online, go to www.creighton.edu/athleticevents.
