FULLERTON, Calif. - Despite a career-high 11 saves by senior goalkeeper, Katie Jo Swanson, the Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, Sept. 9.

The loss dropped the Bluejays to 2-5-1 on the season, while the Titans moved to 2-5 overall.

Coming off a 4-1 over Nebraska Omaha on Friday, Creighton was looking for its first winning streak of the season as they faced off with a Cal State Fullerton team that narrowly missed an up of No. 1 Florida State on Friday, falling 2-1.

Cal State Fullerton came out as the aggressor in the first half, controlling possession for the first 25 minutes of the contest. The Bluejays were able to create two scoring chances during the time, however, as sophomore Stephanie Anasi and junior Kelsey O'Donnell each blasted a shot toward the Titans. 

Anasi's effort was blocked in the 17th minute, while O'Donnell's shot in the 24th minute sailed wide. The Jays defense held strong against the Titans pressure, stopping nine first half shots to keep the game scoreless into the break.

Midway through the second period the Jays best chance to score came on the foot of senior Brittney Neumann.  The Omaha native broke free in front of the defense as a ball was sent by O'Donnell.  Neumann earned a breakaway shot on Titan keeper Lindsey Maricic from 20 yards out, but Maricic was able to make a diving save to preserve the shutout.

Creighton had one final scoring chance in the 84th minute as freshman Kaelyn Korte fired a shot just high. 

The Titans, meanwhile, fired away on Swanson throughout the half.  Finally in the 89th minute at 88:08 Cal State Fullerton's Jennifer Smith found Ann Marie Tangorra with a crossing pass near the top of the box. Tangorra drove a shot high into the back right corner of the net to give the Titans a 1-0 lead.

The Jays were outshot 22-4 in the match, including 13-4 in the second half.

Swanson finished with 11 saves to set her career mark, while Maricic recorded just the one save.

"We played with a very good Cal State Fullerton team today and for 88 minutes we were good, creating chances and defending hard," said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson.  "They made one more play than us and at the end of the day that was the difference."

Creighton returns home to Morrison field to face UMKC on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
