OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's tennis team swept through play on Friday, defeating the Nebraska Omaha team 7-0 at the Koch Family Tennis Center. The Bluejays improve to 9-5 on the season, while UNO drops to 2-9.
The win gave head coach Tom Lilly, who is in his 14th season as the head coach of the Creighton men's and women's tennis teams, his 299th career win at Creighton.
Creighton started off the day by winning all three doubles matches to take the automatic point into singles play. Jennie Hartjes and Analese Snyder defeated Rachel Pierson and Alex Tran 8-4 at No. 1 doubles before Kelsey Schmidt and Mary McMullan downed Heather Hottman and Lindsay Weideman 8-2. Elizabeth Vermillion and Amanda Noonan finished off doubles play with an 8-1 win over Caitlin Christy and Jacqueline Baude at the No. 3 spot.
Singles play followed form, as just one singles match went to three sets. Hartjes downed Alex Tran 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles before Kelsey Schmidt defeated Lindsay Weideman 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Snyder defeated Jacqueline Baude 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 3 singles before McMullan won her No. 4 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Rachel Pierson.
In the only match to go to a 10-pt tie-break, Koehrsen defeated Heather Hottman 3-6, 6-2, 10-1 in the No. 5 singles before Vermillion closed the day with a shutout of Caitlin Christy at the No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
The Creighton women's tennis team will be back in action on Easter weekend, as they host Evansville on Friday, April 6 and Southern Illinois on Saturday, April 7.
