Creighton men's basketball player Doug McDermott headed to Colorado Springs, Colo., on Friday, June 17th to attend the 2011 USA U19 World Championship Team Training Camp. He is one of 20 players in camp, a figure which was cut to 13 on Sunday morning. On Wednesday, June 22nd, McDermott learned he made the team.
While he's away, Doug will be writing a blog exclusively on GoCreighton.com, and will try to keep us updated while he's away. Below is his eighth entry (and first from Europe), with USA Basketball photos by Steven Maikoski/USA Basketball:
June 25 What a long couple of days. We started off our Friday morning with a 6 AM wake up call with an 8:30 flight out of Colorado Springs to Washington DC. I was real tired because I thought it'd be a good idea to stay up late so I could just sleep while up in the air. After our two hour layover in DC we took flight to Frankfurt, Germany which was going to be an eight-hour flight. This is where I thought I could catch up on some sleep, but it didn't quite go as planned.
We got to Germany at about 7 am Saturday local time and had another layover before our flight to Lithuania. At the Frankfurt airport we had a lot of people coming up to us asking if we liked the Dallas Mavericks. Hmm I wonder why? They worship that man over here. My best purchase in Germany had to be what they are known for, the pack of Harribo Gummy bears I got for breakfast. We still had a two hour flight to Lithuania and we were exhausted. Something cool was that we had Jonas Valanciunas on our flight, who was coming home from the NBA draft in Newark. He was selected fifth by the Raptors and we are scrimmaging against his U20 team on Tuesday.
When we got to Lithuania it was check-in time at the hotel and straight to practice. It went a lot better than I thought it would. Maybe working out in the Colorado altitude really does help! It's going to be tough adjusting to this time change being eight hours ahead of Omaha, but I can sacrifice for a few weeks. I will let you know how tomorrow goes as we scrimmage a younger Lithuania team.
